Ready to take the next step? Here is a quick breakdown of the training schedule, depth advancements, and prerequisites for the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification:
⏱️ COURSE DURATION: 2-3 Days (5 total training dives spread over 2 or 3 days).
🎂 MINIMUM AGE:
📈 MAXIMUM DEPTH: 30 meters (100 feet) once certified. (An incredible upgrade from your current 18-meter limit!)
🔏 PREREQUISITES: You must hold a valid PADI Open Water Diver certification (or an equivalent autonomous qualification from another training agency like SSI, CMAS, or BSAC).
📑 LOGGED DIVES: There is no minimum number of logged dives required to start! You can jump straight into this course the very day after completing your beginner license.
🤿 WHAT'S FULLY INCLUDED:

The Advanced Open Water course is incredibly flexible and entirely practical. There are no classroom lectures or final exams. Instead, you will complete 5 specialized Adventure Dives over two action-packed days.
To earn your certification, two of these dives are mandatory core skills required by PADI, while the remaining three are exciting electives chosen by you based on what you want to explore!
These two foundational dives are essential for expanding your depth limits and ensuring you can safely lead your own underwater explorations.
1. Underwater Navigation Dive 🧭: You will master the art of underwater tracking. Your instructor will teach you how to use a dive compass to swim precise patterns, estimate distance using kick-cycles and time, and use natural clues—like sun angles, sand ripples, and rock formations—to always find your way back to the boat or shore.
2. Deep Diving (Down to 30 Meters) 📈: This is the highlight of the course! Accompanied by your instructor, you will descend past your old 18-meter limit into the deep blue. You will experience first-hand how pressure changes color perception, learn how to manage your air supply at depth, and safely experience how your body reacts to increased atmospheric pressure.
You get to customize the rest of your course! Depending on your interests and our local conditions, you will pick three additional dives from our specialized menu.
Here are the most popular choices among our students in Tenerife: Peak Performance Buoyancy, Wreck Diving, Fish Identification, Search and Recovery.

Here is why passionate divers choose to level up their skills with us in Tenerife:
We don't just stick to one training spot. Because our team knows Tenerife's coastline intimately, we match your elective training to the absolute best conditions available.
Our friendly, certified PADI professionals teach in multiple languages—including English, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, and Russian. You will learn in your native tongue, ensuring zero confusion when mastering advanced safety techniques.
The Advanced course shouldn't feel like a factory line. We keep our student-to-instructor ratios small so that you receive true, personalized coaching.
We provide a reliable hotel transfer service across major southern holiday hubs (including Los Cristianos, Las Américas, Costa Adeje, and more) for just a small €4 fee per person. We pick you up, handle the logistics, and bring you right to the water.
We love rewarding forward-thinking divers. By securing your PADI Advanced Open Water course through our website ahead of time, you automatically unlock a 10% online booking discount. Becoming a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver unlocks 70% of the world's dive sites, but your evolution as an underwater explorer doesn't stop here. Now that you can confidently dive to 30 meters, you have the foundational skills needed to master specialized environments and become an indispensable dive buddy.
Here are the most exciting pathways waiting for you after you graduate:
Ask any experienced diver, and they will tell you the Rescue Diver course is the most rewarding, challenging, and fun program they've ever taken. You will transition from looking after yourself to looking after the safety of everyone around you. You will learn to anticipate problems before they happen, manage stress underwater, and execute real surface and submerged rescue scenarios.
Fascinated by the deep blue? While your Advanced certification caps your limit at 30 meters, the Deep Diver Specialty safely expands your boundaries down to 40 meters (130 feet)—the absolute maximum limit for recreational scuba diving. Over 4 deep training dives, you will master emergency decompression protocols, learn how to use specialized deep-diving equipment, and manage nitrogen narcosis like a professional.
Tenerife features incredible underwater wrecks, like the famous El Peñón (Tabaiba) or the Condesito, resting beautifully within your new depth limits. While you get a taste of wrecks during your Advanced course, the full Wreck Diver Specialty teaches you the actual mechanics of exploration. Over 4 dedicated ocean dives, you will master the use of penetration lines and reels, learn how to safely navigate overhead environments within the "light zone," and practice specialized kicking techniques to avoid stirring up silt.
Want to join the top 2% of recreational divers globally? By combining your Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver certifications with any 5 PADI Specialty courses and logging 50 total dives, you will earn the prestigious Master Scuba Diver rating. It is the highest non-professional rating in the PADI system and stamps you as an elite master of the sport.
💡 Ready for a Career Change? If your ultimate dream is to leave the office behind and share your passion for the ocean with others, your Advanced license is the official stepping stone toward the PADI Divemaster course—your passport to working professionally at dive resorts anywhere in the world!
Not at all! This is one of the biggest misconceptions in scuba diving. The course is called Advanced Open Water because it is designed to advance your skills, not because you need to be an expert to join. You can enroll the absolute day after you finish your beginner Open Water Diver course. It is simply the next step in your diving education.
Yes, and we highly recommend it! Nitrox (breathing air with a higher percentage of oxygen) is the perfect partner for advanced diving because it gives you significantly more time at the bottom on deep reefs or wrecks. Since Nitrox is primarily a theory-based specialty, you can easily review the materials alongside your Advanced eLearning and use Nitrox tanks during your actual course dives to graduate with both certifications at once!
Yes, absolutely! Night diving is one of our most popular electives at Diving Atlantis. For a small additional fee we will swap one of your daytime sessions for an unforgettable twilight or evening dive. Armed with powerful underwater torches, you will watch Tenerife’s volcanic reefs transform as daytime fish go to sleep and nocturnal predators—like massive stingrays, hunting octopuses, and glowing cuttlefish—come out to active life.
No, zero final exams! The Advanced program is designed to be highly experiential and practical. You will complete your PADI eLearning modules at home before your holiday, which takes about 5 to 7 hours in total. Once you arrive at our center in Tenerife, we skip the classroom entirely and head straight to the ocean for your briefing and dives.
Think of an Adventure Dive as a trailer for a movie. Your Advanced course consists of 5 individual Adventure Dives (the first dive of 5 different specialties). The great news is that because you complete these during your course, they count as «credit.» If you fall in love with Wreck Diving during your Advanced course, you only need to complete 3 more dives with us to earn your full, standalone PADI Wreck Diver Specialty license!
It is completely normal to feel a bit nervous before your first deep dive, but you will be under the close, direct supervision of our highly experienced instructors. We descend slowly along a reference line, monitoring your comfort, gauge readings, and ear equalization every step of the way. You will learn to safely manage your air supply and recognize the subtle effects of pressure, turning those nerves into pure confidence.
At Diving Atlantis, we believe in transparent pricing. Your course fee includes the hire of all premium scuba equipment needed for the training—including your wetsuit, regulator, BCD, mask, fins, weights, and tanks. We also provide the specialized equipment required for your core training modules, such as a dive compass for your navigation dive and a digital dive computer for your deep dive.
Divers aged 12 to 14 will earn the PADI Junior Advanced Open Water certification. Out of safety precautions for younger, growing bodies, Junior Advanced divers are limited to a maximum depth of 21 meters (70 feet). The moment you turn 15, your depth limit automatically upgrades to the standard adult limit of 30 meters without you needing to retake the course.
We typically conduct 2 ocean training dives per day (usually across two mornings). Because the Advanced course requires 5 total dives, the course takes roughly 2 to 3 days to complete. Our schedule is highly flexible—you don’t have to do the days back-to-back if you want to take a break in the middle of your holiday to explore Tenerife!
Nitrogen narcosis is a completely safe, temporary effect caused by breathing nitrogen at higher pressures, often described as a light, relaxed, or buzzy feeling. It has no lasting effects and vanishes instantly the moment you ascend a few meters into shallower water. Your instructor will teach you exactly how to recognize it and how to calmly signal your buddy to move up a bit if you ever feel it.
