Course Structure & What You Will Learn

PADI Divemaster course Tenerife

The PADI Divemaster course is a comprehensive, hands-on program designed to transform you from a recreational diver into a confident marine leader. The training is divided into three core pillars, combining theoretical knowledge with practical, real-world application.

1. KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT (THEORY)

Through convenient online PADI eLearning, you will study advanced dive theory at your own pace. Supported by your Diving Atlantis mentor, you will master:

  • The physics and physiology of scuba diving.
  • Decompression theory, dive planning, and the mechanics of dive equipment.
  • The dynamics of the marine environment and underwater mapping techniques.
  • Risk management and emergency response protocols.

2. WATERMANSHIP & PRACTICAL SKILL MASTERY

You will refine your physical stamina and elevate your personal diving skills to a demonstration-quality standard. This includes:

  • Stamina Assessments: Swimming, snorkeling, and water-treading exercises to ensure you are in peak professional condition.
  • Diver Rescue Workshop: Perfecting your ability to manage stress and assist divers in distress both on the surface and underwater.
  • The Skills Circuit: Mastering the 24 basic scuba skills so perfectly that you can clearly demonstrate and teach them to nervous beginners.

3. PRACTICAL APPLICATION & INTERNSHIP

The best way to learn is by doing. You will work side-by-side with our active instructors during real daily operations at our dive center. You will get hands-on experience with:

  • Assisting with Students: Learning how to supervise and manage safety while instructors teach Try Dives, Open Water courses, and continuing education.
  • Guiding Certified Divers: Learning how to give professional dive briefings, navigate Tenerife's volcanic reefs, and safely lead groups of certified divers.
  • Dive Center Logistics: Gaining deep insight into the daily running of a busy facility, managing equipment, and organizing boat departures from our two harbors.

FAQs

Yes, because you will be supervising other divers, PADI requires a Diver Medical Statement signed by a licensed physician within the last 12 months confirming you are 100% fit to dive. If you cannot get this signed by your family doctor before leaving home, don’t worry! We can easily arrange an appointment for you with a local specialized diving doctor here in Tenerife during your first few days with us for a small fee.

Yes, absolutely! Through our «Zero to Hero» pathway, you can arrive with no diving experience at all. We will take you step-by-step through your Open Water, Advanced, EFR, and Rescue Diver courses back-to-back, building your skills and logging your dives until you are fully ready to begin your professional Divemaster modules.

To become an active PADI professional, there are two mandatory external costs. First is the PADI Divemaster Crew-Pack (which contains your physical and digital learning materials, slates, and manuals). Second is the PADI Application Fee, which you pay directly to PADI via credit card at the end of your course to activate your global professional membership.

We include the Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) Leader qualification for free because it makes you highly employable. Standard Divemasters can only guide certified divers. As a DSD Leader, you can independently conduct try-dives for tourists in confined open water. This is the most requested skill by dive center owners worldwide when hiring new staff.

No, we actually recommend that you wait! Because the Canary Islands have much lower taxes than mainland Europe, and because Diving Atlantis has wholesale accounts with major manufacturers, you can purchase your professional gear through us at a massive discount. If you only have some gear, we will gladly provide any missing rental parts for free during your training.

If you have your Rescue Diver license but haven’t reached 40 logged dives yet, don’t worry. You can arrive early and do «fun dives» with our center to quickly build up your logbook. Once you hit 40 dives, we can officially activate your Divemaster status and begin your professional training.

Yes. As a diving professional, you must show that you are comfortable and capable in the water. You will complete a few timed watermanship assessments, including a 400-meter swim, a 15-minute water tread/float, an 800-meter snorkel, and a 100-meter tired-diver tow. We will help you practice and prepare for these throughout your course.

Earning potential varies wildly depending on the country, the tourist season, and whether you work full-time or part-time. In high-tourism areas like Tenerife, Divemasters are usually paid a base monthly salary or an hourly rate, often topped up by sales commissions, guiding bonuses, and tips from happy customers.

Yes! PADI fully recognizes qualifying certifications from other major scuba training organizations (like SSI, CMAS, BSAC, NAUI, or RAID). As long as your certifications are equivalent to the PADI Open Water, Advanced, and Rescue Diver levels, you can seamlessly transition into our PADI Divemaster course.

Once you are a certified Divemaster, you are officially a PADI Professional! The next step up the career ladder is the PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) or the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course. Becoming an instructor allows you to independently teach and certify students, which opens up full-time career opportunities anywhere in the world.
