Water Sports In Fuerteventura. Which To Choose?

Fuerteventura, the second largest island of the Canary Islands, located furthest to the east, is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.  The distance to Marocco by the sea is only 100km.  The diversity of the coast and the condition of the water give many opportunities for water sports.  In this article we would like to describe the most popular activities.

   Kitesurfing and windsurfing

Due to the favorable amount of wind it is one of the best places in Europe.  The most famous spot is Sotavento Beach on the south east coast.  Known for its huge lagoon which fills up with the full moon and the new moon when the tides are higher.  A great place to take your first steps.  Because the lagoon depth does not exceed 1m.  However, also experienced people will also find something for themselves thanks to strong winds in the South of the island, it blows practically every day from April to September.  Admirers of this kind of sports also go to Matas Bay with very calm water or La Pared on the west coast in search of waves.  In the North of the island the wind is always a bit weaker, but there are better waves.  Every year in Sotavento there are world kitesurfing and windsurfing championships in July, so you can see experienced competitors.

Wave fans will also find something for themselves but more in the Northern part of the island.  Most surfers are here in the winter, i.e. from October to February when there is very little wind and the waves are better.  Fans of surfing frequently go to Corralejo, Majnicho, El Cotillo.  In the South of the island, La Pared is the most famous place with cool waves.

In addition to these kinds of sports, kayaking has become very popular in recent years.  La Lajita is a very nice place, near Costa Calma which in Spanish means a calm coast.  The ocean is very calm there and there is not so much wind as on Sotavento beach, you do not have to be a professional to go kayaking there.  It can be a great day for a family getaway for anyone over 6 years old.  The surrounding scenery is very beautiful thanks to Oasis Park in the background and wild beaches surrounded by gorgeous cliffs. This contrast landscape attracts a lot of sea animals and birds making this place full of life.  When kayaking, you can often see Atlantic flying fish jumping out of the water.
